Cool weather hardy herbs to grow outdoors in fall & winter
The cold weather is coming. Some of us have even been hit with some flurries, or worse… gasp… full blown snowstorms! Most people take fall as a sign to pack up their gardens and pull out the last of the tomatoes and peppers. Yes, it’s true, some food is in its prime during the hot days of summer, but a lot of others are actually better suited for the cooler days of fall.
Until I started growing my own food, I never took into consideration the seasonality of food, nor did I care to know whether a vegetable or herb was in its prime at that time of year. In fact, I didn’t even notice what country my food came from.
Fast forward a decade and it’s amazing the transformation. I now am passionate about growing and eating with the seasons, learning to appreciate the subtle changes that each crop takes on when its grown at a specific time of year.
Herbs are no exception. Some herbs, like basil, are perfect for hot summer days. But others are actually perfect for the cool weather. They can take some frosty nights and in fact, I’ve eaten herbs from my garden after pushing away the snow from on top of them in December and January!
