Step 1
Decide What to Plant
The first step to planning your garden is to decide what plants you want to grow. Ideally choose a mix of plants you’re excited to grow + plants that are ideally suited to your climate.
Watch the video below to learn more about how to use the Garden Planner to decide what plants to grow.
Or visit the tutorials section to learn more about choosing plants.
Step 2
Draw Your Garden Layout
The second step to planning your garden is to actually draw your garden. We make it easy by showing you the ideal spacing for your plants by using green and grey boxes. If the box is green, you’re safe to plant in that spot!
*This step is best done on a laptop or desktop, since we use the mouse to guide you through the design process. Also, feel free to do Step 1 and 2 at the same time.
Watch the video below to learn more about how to use the Garden Planner to draw your garden out.

Step 3
Decide Your Planting Method
The third step to planning your garden is to review the list of plants in your garden. If you’re on the Lite edition, this is the final step and it will summarize a list of all your plants. It’s helpful to have a list of all the plants in your garden while you’re out shopping or checking inventory of your seeds. Use this list to view how many of each plant you’re growing this year.
If you’re on the full edition, you can also decide the method you’ll be starting each plant. Will you grow from seed or purchase plants? This decision will determine your planting schedule in step 4. Review a list of all your plants and make adjustments as needed.
Visit the tutorials section to learn more about the Plant List.
Step 4
Follow Your Planting Schedule
The final step to planning your garden is to create a planting schedule. The good news is this is already done for you! Your to-do list is automatically updated when you create or update our garden design and if you update your planting method.
Review your schedule so you have an idea of the best timing to plant everything in your garden. The Today tab shows a list of everything you can do in your garden today. The Upcoming tab displays tasks scheduled for the future. You’ll also find a summary of expected Harvest Dates for all the plants in your garden.
By following a customized planting schedule for your climate, gardening will be easier and you’ll see better results!
