This is when you should plant your garden for fall
I remember when I was just getting into gardening and trying to figure out when I was supposed to plant everything. There are so many dates and numbers and trying to sort it all out was a lot to take in. If math isn’t your favorite subject, it’s not a fun thing to tackle.
That’s why in this video I’m breaking down fall planting into the 2 factors that matter. I’ll walk through the manual way of determining when it’s the right time for you to plant, and then how you can use the garden planner to take all the guesswork away and tell you exactly when you should be planting a garden for fall, for your climate.
If you’re intrigued about the idea of planting a fall garden but have no idea when you’re actually supposed to be doing it, this video will help clear it up.

There are two main things to consider when planning a fall garden. Your first frost date, which is when it starts to dip below freezing in the fall, and the number of days to harvest for each fall plant you’re thinking of growing.
To plan your garden manually, make a spreadsheet with a row for each fall plant you’re thinking of growing, and do this calculation for each. First Frost Date – # Days to Harvest. If you’re planting from seed and know the number of days it takes for each seed to sprout, you can also include that number in your calculation. First Frost Date – (# Days to Harvest + # Days to Germinate).
Or if you want to skip the math and design and plan your fall garden the easy way, you can try this vegetable garden planning app.
It’s so much fun when you start to garden with the seasons and honor nature and what each plants. For a season-by-season breakdown of the gardening year, check out this video.
