Curated List of My Top Gardening Supplies
Over the past decade I’ve tried hundreds of different gardening supplies. Some have been amazing, but more often they end up breaking within a few months or don’t live up to my expectations.
To help you get the most value from your investment when buying gardening supplies, I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite gardening products. These can all be bought online in the US and Canada, and in some cases worldwide.
Here’s a curated list of my favorite gardening supplies I’ve used and loved over the last 11 years.
Watering Can
If you have a small garden, or you have indoor house plants, a watering can like this is the simplest option for watering. This is small but beautiful and I love it for my indoor plants. I use a Haws watering can for my outdoor plants, but I haven’t been able to find a source to buy it in North America. Once I find a site that maintains a stock of them, I’ll update this page.
Plant Labels
I love to keep all my plants labelled in my garden. It keeps everything tidy and organized, an also adds a nice touch of class to the garden. These ones are great since they’re made of metal, not plastic.
Pruners
I absolutely love Fiskars as a gardening supply company that builds products that last. These pruners are easy to use, they work well and they’ve lasted for several years so far. They’re a great option for keeping your plants neat and tidy. If you need larger pruners to cut through thick bushes or twigs, these loopers are a great option that I have as well.
Shovel
You’ll probably need a large shovel if you need to create a new garden or if you maintain a larger garden, but most of the time I use this small shovel. It’s strong and reliable and it has measurement markers which is handy when you’re planting bulbs which often need to be planted several inches deep.
Weeder
Once I learned how to weed using a hoe like this, it was a game changer! No more pulling giant weeds and breaking my back. Just skim the soil every week or two with this weeder and you’ll keep your garden weed free. I’ve tried a handful of other similar weeders that were less expensive and all broke within a few months. This is the only one that has stood the test of time.
Garden Planner
Ok so I’m a bit partial to this garden planner app (it’s mine), but this has changed the way I grow food. For over 5 years I was using another Garden Planner on the market, but it was missing some critical features like a personalized planting schedule and filters to help me decide what to plant in my area. Now I can use this to design and plan my garden every year and return to it whenever I want to add new plants or write a note in my Garden Journal.
Seeds & Plants
I buy my seeds from a few different companies, depending on what I’m buying. You can buy plants online from some of these stores, but they might not deliver to your area. Live plants can be tricky to source online. I have a lot of seed companies I use, but some of my favorites are:
- Richters Herbs. If you’re looking for medicinal herbs, this is where you want to look. They have a huge assortment of plants – half of which I’ve never heard of. I enjoy reading their catalogue and learning about all the amazing herbs I can grow. Plus they sell vegetable seeds and live plants, so this can be your one-stop shop.
- Hawthorn Seeds. This is a small family owned organic seed company near where I live, so I like to support them. If you live in Canada and want a nice selection of organic seeds, check them out.
- Baker Creek. This is my go-to supplier if I’m looking for heirloom seeds. I also grow hybrids since this can sometimes be a simple solution to deal with a pest or disease, but as much as possible I’ll choose heirloom or open pollinated seeds, and when I’m looking for them, this is where I go.
- Renee’s Seeds. This company out of California is one I recently discovered. I tried some new varieties and they all turned out great! I also love the art work on the front of the seed packets. It adds a nice touch.
- OSC Seeds/Aimers Organics. This is another Canadian company, and they’ve been around for over a century. I love their Aimers organic selection and go back to them often.
- Whiffletree Farm. This is who I use when I’m buying fruit trees or bushes. Most of them are shipped bare root which means they are planted in early spring or fall. They have an amazing selection, but sadly only ship in Canada. But if you live in Canada and want to grow fruit, they’re my top choice!
This personally curated list of garden supplies has stood the test of time. Hubby and I put our gardening tools to the test and these options are some of the best we’ve ever tried. Let me know in the comments below if you have a favorite I didn’t list here. I’d love to check it out!
