How to Filter Your Plant Results
To help you design a garden that’s optimal for you and your location, we have a wide variety of plant filters to help narrow your search.
To open up the plant filters, click on the plant selector (Add a Plant) button.
Then click on Filters.
You can use a single filter or mix and match any combination of filters to perfectly suit your situation.
Type – Lets you choose between different types of plants (vegetables, fruits, herbs etc.)
Days to Harvest – Lets you select plants based on how long they will take from planting to harvest. This is helpful if you live in an area with a short summer and you want to make sure you only select plants that grow quickly. It’s also helpful if you’re planting in summer and you want to select plants that will finish growing before your season is over. We tell you how many days you have left in your growing season to help you decide what filter to choose. If your season hasn’t started yet, the number of days reflects your full growing season.
*We use the average days to harvest for each plant. Different varieties of each plant can have different maturity days so be sure to check your plant/seeds for that variety’s exact number of days.
Harvesting Seasons – This helps you pick plants that are optimal or that come into harvest in a specific season. This is especially helpful when designing early spring gardens or when planning a winter garden. You an also use the Climate filters to help with this.
Ideal Climate – These filters help you match the plant’s ideal climate with the climate they will be growing in. These are especially useful to help plan a fall, winter and early spring garden by selecting cool and cold plants.
Daily Sunlight – This allows you to select plants that match the sunlight available in your garden. This is especially helpful if you have a shady area and are looking for plants to fill. It also helps if you have a hot and sunny area so you can filter down to plants that want lots of sun.
Difficulty – If you’re new to gardening, by selecting plants in the easy category, you’ll increase your chances of success in your garden. This difficulty rating is an average, since many factors can influence whether a plant will be easy or hard in your specific garden.
Life Cycle – This filter lets you restrict your list to only annuals or only perennials. If you select perennials, you should also choose your growing zone. (We tell you what your growing zone is directly above the filter). By filtering perennials in your growing zone, it will only include plants that can survive your winter. *Different varieties of each plant can have different growing zones, so be sure to double check your plant/seeds for that variety’s zone.
As you update the filters, the list of plants below will change accordingly.
Once you’ve found your perfect plant, click on it and add it to your garden. If you need help with understanding the colored boxes, see this section.
